His Majesty King Harald V of Norway - 1937-2026

King Harald was far more than a patron of our sport; he was one of its most accomplished, passionate, and enduring figures. A sailor of international distinction, His Majesty represented Norway in three consecutive Olympic Games – Tokyo 1964, where he carried the Norwegian flag at the Opening Ceremony, Mexico City 1968, and Munich 1972 – competing in the 5.5 Metre and Soling classes.

He also opened the 1994 Winter Olympics in Lillehammer. 

His competitive spirit and skill on the water was a constant throughout his life. Highlights of his remarkable sailing career include a silver medal at the 1982 World Championships, a gold medal at the 1987 One-Ton World Championship aboard Fram X, and a bronze at the 1988 World Championship. He also won gold at the 2005 European Championship in the Sira Class and finished sixth at the 2007 World Championships. 

He also finished third at the 2018 World Championships, and in 2022 – at the age of 85 – he competed against the world’s finest sailors to secure a 10th-place finish in the 8 Metre World Championship in Geneva. 

Beyond his impressive list of accolades, King Harald embodied the true spirit of seamanship: integrity, sportsmanship, and a lifelong commitment to the ocean. His leadership as President of Honour provided World Sailing – a position he took on in 1994 after succeeding his late father, King Olav V – with invaluable wisdom, guiding our organisation’s efforts to promote inclusivity, youth participation, and marine conservation worldwide. 

Quanhai Li, World Sailing President, said, “His Majesty King Harald V had a great presence on the water, where he competed alongside generations of sailors and represented both his nation and his sport with dignity and distinction. His service is a powerful reminder of the unique camaraderie that defines our sport and everyone at World Sailing is grateful to him for his support throughout his tenure as Honorary President. His Majesty’s legacy will forever remain anchored to the sport and in the hearts of sailors across the globe. He will be deeply missed.” 

Guro Steine, President, Norwegian Sailing Federation, commented, “On behalf of the Norwegian Sailing Federation, I would like to express our deepest sorrow at the passing of His Majesty the King of Norway. Norway has lost a deeply beloved King, and the sailing community in Norway has lost one of its foremost ambassadors. Throughout his long life, King Harald was an accomplished sailor, with a true passion for the sport that inspired generations. For those of us in the sailing community, he was not only our King; he was one of our own. He shared the same joy in wind, sea and memorable sailing experiences. On the racecourse and in harbour, he met people with warmth, curiosity and respect, and we experienced him as exceptionally down-to-earth and approachable. He was a sailing King, but also one of us.

“His Majesty the King of Norway was the first President of the Norwegian Sailing Federation when it was founded in 1970. His importance to both the Norwegian and the international sailing community can hardly be overstated. Through his dedication, he helped elevate the sport, foster pride and fellowship, and give sailing a special place in the Norwegian national spirit. We will remember him with deep gratitude and respect. Our thoughts are with Her Majesty the Queen, the Royal Family, and all those who today mourn the loss of a remarkable King and an exceptional fellow human being.”

World Sailing extends its deepest condolences to Her Majesty Queen Sonja, Crown Prince Haakon, the Norwegian Royal Family, and the people of Norway.
